Who We Are

In 1995 The Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy formed in response to an alarming increase in coastal development along Nova Scotia's South Shore. The KCC is a charitable, non-governmental, community land trust. We work to preserve headlands, beaches, and wetlands on the Kingsburg Peninsula (near Lunenburg) and to safeguard traditional access to shorelines. The Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy depends on private giving and volunteer effort, and over the years has established a solid record both for fundraising and for managing land donations.

Currently we own and/or steward the 124-acre Gaff Point as well as Sand Dollar Beach, 14 acres of wetlands bordering on Kingsburg Pond, an ocean-front meadow on Hirtle’s Beach and land that accesses Kingsburg Beach. The KCC also monitors the several freshwater ponds on the peninsula and the woodlands on Gaff Point with support from the Geography Department at St Mary’s University, Halifax.

What We Do

The Mission of the Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy is to protect habitat, beaches, wetlands and shoreline, and to secure access to these places for public enjoyment, now and forever. Our area of main interest is the Kingsburg Peninsula, which extends from Riverport to Hell Point, and Gaff to Rose Head.

This is accomplished by working with the community to create a legacy of protected green spaces, which includes the locating and establishing of long-term community access to beaches and coastline.

Not only are we an officially recognized charitable organization but we are also one of the few organizations in Nova Scotia eligible to accept ecological gifts and issue receipts that bring tax benefits to those who either donate or agree to place conservation easements on ecologically sensitive land.

The KCC continues to both actively seek more green space and to improved public access to the coastline on the Kingsburg Peninsula. Like most charitable organizations, we rely on donations to cover much of our operating expenditures. We also rely heavily on volunteer effort to carry out as much of our program as humanly possible.

Thanks to the generosity of those who care about our efforts in the Kingsburg Peninsula, we are able to carry out a significant amount of work through their donations. Donations vary in size and all are appreciated and wisely utilized. Because we are a registered charitable organization, we will provide tax receipts for all donations.
